EVERETT - TJ Maxx plans to open
a store in Everett Mall Village later this year, filling the final
space in the new shopping center just west of the main mall.
A discount retailer of clothing and home decor
items, TJ Maxx will occupy just more than 26,000 square feet south
of PetSmart.
The Village, which opened in fall 2005, also has
Best Buy, Sleep Country USA, Quiznos and Bed Bath & Beyond stores.
Construction on the new store is under way, and
it should be open in the fall, said Sonya Cosentini, a TJ Maxx spokeswoman.
Founded in 1976, TJ Maxx is the nation's largest
"off-price" chain, selling women's, men's and children's
brand name clothing at prices lower than most department and specialty
stores. With 800 stores nationwide, the only other TJ Maxx in the
county is located on Highway 99 in Edmonds.
"I think it's actually a perfect fit to round
out the Village," said Julie Tennyson, Everett Mall's marketing
director, as there is no other clothing retailer in that strip of
stores.
TJ Maxx is not the only major tenant moving into
Everett Mall this year. With last week's closure of Mervyn's on
the south end of the shopping center, construction to transform
that space is scheduled to begin soon.
When the work is done, LA Fitness plans to open
a health club in the expanded first-floor space that housed Mervyn's.
The other half of the space and the entire second-floor
level there will be leased by Steve & Barry's University Sportswear.
That fast-growing chain offers jeans, T-shirts, other sportswear
and casual clothes as well as shoes, with most items are priced
at less than $15.
Everett Mall's owner, Steadfast Cos., has spent
millions since summer 2004 to build The Village, attract more major
retailers such as Old Navy and Borders and renovated portions of
the shopping center. The owner also has proposed a development of
74 single-family houses on land at the shopping center's southern
edge.
